Toledo, Spain - City Guide

Central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid, Toledo has a rich history and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town sits on a hill surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River granite.

ATTRACTIONS

The Alcazar
In the highest part of the city, overlooking the city. Built in the 16th Century by the French in 1810 and restored as a military college burned in 1882. It now houses a museum about the CivilWar.

Castillo de San Servando
A medieval castle on the banks of the River Tagus, and was originally a convent built in 1088. In 1874 it was designated a national monument.

The Gothic Cathedral
It dates from the 13th Century, the cathedral is one of the largest Gothic buildings in Europe. The cathedral is home to a spectacular baroque altar and paintings by El Greek.

Monasterio de San Juan de losReyes
Founded by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile, to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Toro (1476) about the army of Alfonso V of Portugal.

Santa Maria la Blanca
The oldest synagogue in Europe still belongs to the Catholic Church. Located in the historic Jewish quarter of Toledo, the century synagogue was built in the late 12 th and was converted into a church in the Order of CalatravaEarly 15th Century.

El Transito Synagogue
was founded by Samuel ha-Levi in 1356, the synagogue, the church in 1492 after the expulsion of Jews from the city. Today is part of the Sephardic Museum, which explores the Jewish culture of medieval Toledo.

Church of Santiago del Arrabal
It dates from the 12th Century, the church is built in the Mudejar style. The church houses a beautiful wooden ceiling and an ornate GothicMudejar pulpit.

Mosque of Cristo de la Luz
It dates to the 10th century, this small mosque in a park on the north wall of the city. It 'the only remaining mosque in Toledo.

El Museo de Greek
This is a house-museum, which was designed as a recreation of the artist at home and is home to a number of important paintings.

Iglesia de Santo Tome
