Whether your interest lies in cooking or a part time serving gig, the career opportunities available in restaurants are plentiful to hard working people. The environment fast paced, fun, and has a number of benefits. In this article, we will outline a few of the positions found in your day to day dining establishment.

Host

A host is the individual aiding customers with reservations, both in person and via telephone, and who seats patrons once they arrive. Hosts should generally be well groomed, friendly, and able to stand on their own two feet for long periods of time throughout their shift.

Bartender

These professionals are those responsible for serving alcoholic beverages of all types to bar patrons and servers alike. They are in charge of maintaining bar stocks and providing friendly, helpful service to the customers. Bartenders should be able to lift heavy amounts of weight, including wine cases, beer boxes, glasses, and other heavy items, while working in a fast paced, and sometimes stressful environment.

Server

A server is one who takes the orders and delivers food to the customers. Servers must learn to memorize various menu descriptions, have a keen sense of balance when carrying orders, and be able to anticipate customer needs while putting on a smile and interacting with the patrons.

Food Runner

The job of the food runner is to aid the servers in bringing orders to the table, ensuring that each meal is delivered hot, fresh, and at the same time. Food runners should be attentive, quick, and capable of remembering which guest received which plate. They will also be required to handle the pressure of working around a busy kitchen.

Line Cook

A line cook is an individual who commonly works with a team of other line cooks in order to prepare the food that is ordered by the guests. Line cooks should expect to spend a fair amount of time chopping, cleaning, preparing, and standing in an area which is quite often hot and crowded. They should work well under pressure, and keep cleanliness as a top priority.

Pastry Cook

A pastry cook is a special food preparation professional who makes all the goodies guests enjoy once the meal is through. These cooks are typically required to make a variety of sweets and baked items throughout their shift. In addition, pastry cooks must maintain a clean working environment and be able to provide quality goods while working in a stressful and fast paced environment.
